This unification is clearly the direction for the future' - Eric Kandel, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine'A remarkable book. It changes everything' - Brian EnoHow does the mind connect to the body? Why does it feel like something to be us? For one of the boldest thinkers in neuroscience, solving this puzzle has been a lifetime's quest. Now at last, the man who discovered the brain mechanism for dreaming appears to have made a breakthrough. The very idea that a solution is at hand may seem outrageous. Isn't consciousness intangible, beyond the reach of science? Yet Mark Solms shows how misguided fears and suppositions have concealed its true nature. Stick to the medical facts, pay close attention to the eerie testimony of hundreds of neurosurgery patients, and a way past our obstacles reveals itself.Join Solms on a voyage into the extraordinary realms beyond. More than just a philosophical argument, The Hidden Spring will forever alter how you understand your own experience. There is a secret buried in the brain's ancient foundations: bring it into the light and we fathom all the depths of our being.Book The Hidden Spring: A Journey to the Source of Consciousness Review :
Upon first reading the title of this book, one might worry that Mark had finally submitted to some New Age mysticism and the “journey” described would lead the reader to some esoteric ontology. But the journey described in the title turns out to be Mark’s personal journey which begins in early childhood when his brother was forever changed after suffering a traumatic brain injury. This incident gives inertia to a lifelong intellectual journey to demystify the explanatory-gap between the brain and the mind. The first half of this extraordinary book takes the form of a reminiscence which invites the reader to follow along as Mark encounters the people and ideas which would shape his conceptualization of consciousness. Freud, Chalmers, Panksepp, and Friston all loom large in this narrative. And each of these luminaries provide vital pieces of the puzzle which are successfully assembled together in the second half of the book. And that is where the true magic happens.Solms struggles valiantly to make the Free Energy Principle conceptually accessible for the first time to non-mathematicians and in my view, he succeeds triumphantly. And anyone familiar with the FEP will appreciate what a Herculean task that is in itself. After the reader is fully provisioned with this new conceptual toolkit which includes ideas such as active inference, variational free energy, and prediction error minimization, Solms proceeds to assemble all the pieces of the puzzle accumulated across a lifetime and presents a hypothesis describing HOW and WHY subjective consciousness exists to service the FEP. He describes how the “feeling” of hedonic affect improves interoceptive model efficiency and minimizes free energy. In short, he describes how subjectivity arises from known physical laws.Perhaps for the first time in human history, science provides a sturdy bridge across the epistemic gap between the brain and the mind. Between the objective and the subjective reference frame. And as the reader is still reeling from the implications of this revelation, Solms proceeds to outline research protocols designed to test and falsify his hypothesis. So rather than some goofy New Age ontology, the reader of The Hidden Spring is introduced to a completely new conceptual stratum which subsumes all other ontological concepts. The FEP is in every way an existential principle and a priori to all others. Because anything and everything which can be said to exist does so in service to the Free Energy Principle. Including Consciousness. This book is informative of some aspects of modern neuroscience and for that is worth a few stars. For explaining consciousness the book is worth zero.Solms plausibly finds the seat (a seat?) of consciousness in the brain stem, which deals with 'feeling' as opposed to cognition. He claims feeling presupposes consciousness (there is no such thing as unconscious feeling). But this is just play on words. An unconscious being could have all the physiological attributes of affective response without having a conscious mind. This is perfectly obvious.
